The Raspberry Pi is a single-board computer that requires an operating system (OS) in order to function. This very simple tutorial teaches you how to install the official supported operating system Raspbian Jessie on a microSD card for your RPi.

STEP 1. Get your Raspberry Pi (the one used in this tutorial was housed in the very popular official Raspberry Pi 3 Development Board Case), a microSD card (we recommend a minimum of 4GB which will accommodate the OS image with plenty of room left), and an SD card adapter (which is usually included when you buy a microSD card).
STEP 2. Download Raspbian Jessie with PIXEL and the Win32DiskImager. This may or may not take a while, depending on how fast your internet connection is. Hang in there! 😀
STEP 3. Open the Win32DiskImager. Under image file choose the path to the Raspbian Jessie image you downloaded. Under device choose the path to your microSD card (in this case, it’s in drive F). Choose WRITE.
STEP 4. That’s it! Your microSD card should now look something like this. Now you can insert in into your RPi, connect any peripherals you want (mouse, keyboard, monitor, etc), and turn it on!
